TURFED - LIFT 2014

'Yearningly beautiful and moving' Lyn Gardner, The Guardian ****

Turfed used the philosophy of football to explore the global issue of youth homelessness

“You can be born in a winning team, with good parents, that coach you, cheer for you. Or you can be born in a losing team: you might be good at playing the game but no one is there to explain the rules, to cheer for you.”

A cast of young artists — some of whom have experienced homelessness in London, while others have been street children in Tanzania, the Philippines and Brazil — used spoken word, sharp choreography and stunning visuals to shine a light on the global issue of youth homelessness. Taking inspiration from the double meaning of the title (the turf of a football pitch, and what it is to be turfed out of home), they transformed the industrial hangar of Hackney Downs Studios with intimate performances of passion, rebellion and hope.

In this short documentary we follow the young cast of LIFT's 2014 commission 'Turfed' as they create one of the flagship shows for the LIFT 2014 international festival.

Wonderful … beautiful … a dreamlike weave of athletic manoeuvres, expressionistic dance, folk song and popping beats…
